Día Internacional de la Lesión Medular: INR brindó más de 50 mil atenciones de rehabilitación a personas con daños en la médula espinal
Especialista explicó que las lesiones medulares, en su mayoría, son de origen traumático, como caídas, accidentes de tránsito y lesión por arma de fuego.
En el marco del Día Internacional de la Lesión Medular, que se conmemora cada 5 de setiembre, el Ministerio de Salud (Minsa) hace un llamado a la población a tomar conocimiento sobre las implicancias de esta lesión y a construir entornos seguros para frenar la incidencia de esta discapacidad que impacta de manera severa a la funcionalidad e independencia de las personas.
Como reflejo del compromiso del sector frente a los casos de lesiones medulares, el Instituto Nacional de Rehabilitación (INR) “Dra. Adriana Rebaza Flores” Amistad Perú – Japón ha brindado, entre enero a julio del 2026, un total de 51 344 atenciones.
De acuerdo con la Dra. Lourdes Andía Tello, jefa del Departamento de Investigación, Docencia y Rehabilitación Integral en Lesiones Medulares del INR, las atenciones fueron de índole médica, terapéutica (física, ocupacional y del lenguaje), psicológica, nutricional y de servicio social.
En su mayoría, los pacientes tratados se encuentran dentro de la población económicamente activa. La población adulta de 30 a 59 años representó la mayor demanda asistencial con un 60.74 %, seguida por los jóvenes (18.03 %), adultos mayores (16.37 %), adolescentes (3.91 %) y niños (0.95 %).
La especialista detalló que las lesiones medulares, mayormente, son de origen traumático, representando las caídas el 23.39 %, los accidentes de tránsito con 18.31 %, lesión por arma de fuego con 16.64 % y otros con 41.66 %.
“De ahí la importancia de prevenir, por ejemplo, las caídas en los adultos mayores en el hogar utilizando calzado e iluminación adecuada, en los trabajos de riesgo emplear los elementos de seguridad, respetar las normas de tránsito, así como evitar sumergirse en aguas profundas y desconocidas, entre otras medidas”, señaló.
Cobertura de servicios
Respecto a la oferta de servicios en pacientes con esta condición, los especialistas del INR realizan primero una evaluación médica especializada para determinar el nivel y tipo de lesión. De acuerdo con ello, se establece un programa de rehabilitación integral e individualizado, dado que cada paciente presenta necesidades propias y capacidades distintas.
La atención es brindada por un equipo multidisciplinario, liderado por el médico rehabilitador, el cual abarca terapia física, cardiorrespiratoria y ocupacional, así como apoyo psicológico, evaluación nutricional, enfermería y trabajo social, ya sea en modalidad hospitalaria o ambulatoria.
La reincorporación del paciente a las actividades cotidianas dependerá de su nivel de lesión y capacidades El objetivo principal es la inclusión social, la adaptación de su proyecto de vida y el desarrollo de actividades laborales y recreativas, contando con la accesibilidad necesaria para su pleno desenvolvimiento.

Por el Día Internacional de la Lesión Medular, el INR realizó una jornada multisectorial para sensibilizar sobre la prevención de esta condición y garantizar la inclusión de las personas con discapacidad en igualdad de oportunidades.
En el evento se brindaron servicios gratuitos gracias a la participación de diversas instituciones como el Reniec (trámite de DNI electrónico) y el Conadis (obtención del carné de discapacidad y pensión del Programa CONTIGO). Asimismo, el Ministerio de Justicia brindó asesoría legal, mientras que la Municipalidad de Chorrillos participó a través de la Ompaed y sus programas sociales.
